| About the Artist
“At the moment between sundown and darkness or sunrise and the light of the day there is a transformative spirit of place which I try to capture in my paintings. Whether the subject is a landscape, cityscape, or abstraction I focus on the multi-colored layers of textures and patterns of land, form, water, and sky to create my vision.
In the natural beauty of the landscape I recognize a spiritual power. Exploring these spiritual elements reflect an inner search for the harmonious, peaceful, meditative state. In all urban subjects I see similar elements in the architectural beauty and human activity.”

The majority of landscape and cityscape paintings are oil on canvas. The under-painting is done with a palette knife or large brush. Multiple layers of color are then built upon this. Typically the painted canvas is exposed todirect sunlight ridding it of the excess oil. This produces a mat appearance; a technique used by some of the early Impressionists.
The abstract paintings are created throught the layering of modeling paste and layer upon layer of rolled on color. It is only through this indepth overlay and buildup that the final textures are created. Paint is also dripped and thrown at the work to create a oppositional effect.
Donna Frank has a Masters of Art and Education as well as a B.F.A in Painting and Printmaking. Graduate studies were conducted in France and Italy. |
